The Counseling Experience

My overall goal in counseling is to help you feel better and function better.  The counseling experience itself can include many different strategies and techniques, depending upon the problem.  It always relies on a relationship that is characterized by honest discussion, mutual respect, trust, and confidentiality.  I am committed to working my hardest to assist you in overcoming your problems.  You will also have to give your best effort to discuss difficult issues, to challenge sabotaging thinking, and to practice new behaviors that will help you feel better.  An excellent counseling relationship becomes a unique opportunity to understand and change even long-established patterns of negative behaviors, beliefs, feelings, and attitudes.  As a wholistic practitioner, I network extensively and I routinely utilize integrative healing strategies.

Professional Experience

In 1972 I began counseling in the Roanoke area. From 1972 until 1985 I was employed as a rehabilitation counselor for the Virginia Department of Rehabilitative Services. From 1985 until the present I have been in private practice in Roanoke.

Clinical Areas of Interest to Me

I work with individuals, couples, groups, and families. Many of my areas of interest and expertise include anxiety, panic attacks, phobias, depression, physical and sexual abuse, PTSD, stress management, dissociative disorders, chronic pain management, hypnosis, HIV+ and AIDS, gay and lesbian issues, spirituality, career and vocational issues, major life transitions, single parenting, workplace changes, grief-loss, adult ADHD, progressive and terminal illnesses, disfiguring conditions, conflict resolution, anger management, self esteem building, relationship strengthening, values and ethical challenges, and various health and wellness topics. I also present talks, seminars, and training workshops on most of the above issues.

Education and Credentials

I received my B.A. in Psychology from Wake Forest University and my M.S. in Rehabilitation Counseling from Virginia Commonwealth University. My training in hypnosis was at the National Academy of Clinical Hypnosis in Columbia, Maryland.

I am licensed by the Virginia Board of Professional Counselors to provide both general counseling as well as rehabilitation counseling.  I hold three national certifications:  Certified Clinical Mental Health Counselor (CCMHC), Certified Rehabilitation Counselor (CRC), and National Clinical Counselor (NCC).

What Nurtures Our Souls?

For me the spiritual essence of who I am is nurtured by a wonderful family, terrific friends, outstanding colleagues, great pets, gardening, swimming, good food, a spectacular place to live, and all those who love and care for me. I promise to nurture my soul so that I can be a worthy guide to you in the discovery of what it is that nurtures your soul and moves you toward your own personal fulfillment and happiness.
